In South Africa, motor vehicles must be registered, licensed and re-licensed every year. The Electronic National Traffic Information System (eNatis) is the official register for all vehicle, licensing, contravention and accident data.

Before the expiry date of your motor vehicle license, a Motor Vehicle License Renewal Notice (MLV2) will be posted to you. This form must be completed to renew your vehicle license. If you do not have an MLV2 form, you need to complete a green ALV form to apply for renewal of a motor vehicle license.

After the expiry date of a motor vehicle license, registered owners have a grace period of 21 days in which to re-license the vehicle.

Where to apply for a motor vehicle license

Applications for motor vehicle licenses must be made at the nearest licensing authority. Contact the relevant provincial department of transport to find the nearest licensing authority:

Motor vehicle licenses can also be renewed at Post Offices in all provinces except Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, North West and Western Cape.
